Olympics - finis

Well, I promised this would be sporadic!

So the Olympics are over for another four years! I decided to put aside all (well, some) of my ideals and morals and just enjoy the spectacle, but that was hard. Media coverage was pretty over the top, and, quite frankly, boring.

If you were interested in sport generally, not just Australians winning medals, SBS was the place to go - at least they had cottoned on to the fact that there were other nations participating. Pity about the ads, though.

Generally, I think the whole point about participating in the Games got lost a long time ago. The focus was on winning medals, preferable gold.(Pity about those unfortunate people/teams who "had to settle" for silver/bronze!) For me, the highlight was the chap from Togo, who won his country's first ever medal. Check it out here. Inspirational stuff, although a bit more research will show that Boukpeti, who was born in France, has only ever visied Togo once! Olympics do funny things to one's parentage and history. But it's all part of the show, I guess. Speaking of shows, the Chinese put on a pretty good show on the whole, despite all the fuss about too much technology and singers being replaced.

And, really, does it matter if the Brits won more medals than us? After all, we can still beat them at cricket, and that's the main thing!
